Why Topstep Remains My First Choice

TopstepX, TopstepTV and the community behind my trading.

By Updated 4 October 202620 min
Relationship: I work with Topstep as a brand ambassador. This article reflects my own experience and opinions.
Why I Choose Topstep. TopstepX, TopstepTV and Community.

I have been part of the Ambassador programme since 2023. I use Topstep and TopstepX, and I am present every day in the Discord community and on the YouTube channel.

Information checked on 4 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars. Programme rules, features and offers can change; the official terms and your account dashboard take precedence.

For me, Topstep is the best futures prop firm. That is my personal judgement, built around the things I value as a day trader: a company with a long history, a platform I enjoy using, practical risk controls, and people I can interact with every day.

If you have only compared challenge prices, you have seen a small part of what Topstep offers. Spend time with TopstepX, watch TopstepTV and join the community, and the reasons for my preference become much easier to understand.

I trade NQ and GC futures. My approach is based on price action, breakouts and breakdowns, with additions to positions that are already in profit. I avoid trading news releases and earnings reactions because that volatility does not suit my approach, although I enjoy observing them. I want my trading environment to support those choices.

This article explains what Topstep offers, why I recommend taking a serious look at it, and how to get useful value from the platform and community. You do not need to know the terminology already. We will start with the programme itself.

The article in two minutes

  • Experience: Topstep traces its roots to 2010, with TopstepTrader launching in 2012. Its current offering reflects years of development. [1]
  • A clear route: the Trading Combine is an evaluation in simulation; Express Funded Accounts remain simulated but can earn real payouts; Live Funded Accounts trade live capital, subject to selection and eligibility. [2][3][4]
  • My strongest platform argument: TopstepX gives me practical ways to set boundaries, including personal loss limits, risk-setting locks and voluntary lockouts. [8][9][10]
  • Learning around the trading day: TopstepTV combines market preparation, live broadcasts, coaching and a video library. [13][14]
  • People you can meet: the official Discord provides a place to ask questions and take part in the community. You will find me there, and on YouTube, every day. [15]
  • Real costs and conditions: subscriptions, drawdown rules and payout requirements matter. Understanding them is part of getting the best out of the programme. [5][17][18]

1 A company with roots in the trading floor

Key takeaway

More than a decade of development sits behind Topstep’s current offering. That history helps explain why it now extends well beyond an evaluation account.

The story begins with Michael Patak and the Chicago trading pits. Topstep describes how heavy losses early in his career pushed him to take risk management and consistency more seriously. The name comes from the top step of the pit, a position associated with successful traders and a better view of the action. [1]

The important milestones are straightforward: Patak Trading Partners in 2010, TopstepTrader in 2012, the Topstep rebrand in 2020, TopstepTV in 2023 and TopstepX in 2024. [1]

I put weight on that history. Traders are committing time, attention and money to a programme; continuity matters when choosing the business on the other side of that relationship. Longevity cannot guarantee how a company will perform in the future, but it is a meaningful part of my assessment.

I also like the direction of the development. The platform, education and community address different parts of a trader's day. A trader needs to understand a market, operate the tools, handle losses and review decisions. An evaluation alone cannot do all of that.

That broader approach is a major reason Topstep remains my first choice.

2 Understand what you are joining

Key takeaway

Topstep offers a route from simulated evaluation to funded trading. Know which stage you are in and what that stage allows.

A proprietary trading firm, often shortened to prop firm, uses company capital for trading. Topstep's retail programme gives traders a way to demonstrate their ability before potentially being selected to trade live firm capital. [2]

The Trading Combine

The Trading Combine is the simulated evaluation. You trade under defined limits, work towards a profit target and meet a consistency objective. The essential account rule is staying above the Maximum Loss Limit, or MLL. Evaluation profits cannot be withdrawn or carried into the next account. [3]

I find this structure useful because it gives performance a context. A large winning day means little if the next session destroys the account. The evaluation asks a trader to produce results while respecting constraints.

The Express Funded Account

After passing, you can activate an Express Funded Account, usually called an XFA. An XFA is simulated, with access to real payouts when its requirements are met. Its balance starts at zero. You choose an XFA Standard or Consistency payout path, and a scaling plan governs the permitted position size. [4]

That distinction is worth understanding immediately. A simulated funded account is not the same as a personal brokerage account or a live account. The payout opportunity is real, while the trading environment and contractual conditions are different.

The Live Funded Account

Selected eligible traders can move to a Live Funded Account using Topstep's capital in live markets. Passing a Combine does not guarantee an immediate live allocation. Geographic eligibility also matters; some traders can access an XFA without being eligible for Live. [2][23]

The Trading Combine is a simulated evaluation with no withdrawals of evaluation profits

Figure 1. The Trading Combine is a simulated evaluation with no withdrawals of evaluation profits. An Express Funded Account is simulated and can pay real payouts under its rules. Live Funded trading uses firm capital and requires selection and eligibility.

The account label needs a translation

A 50K Combine begins at a simulated $50,000, with an initial MLL of $48,000. The initial loss allowance is therefore $2,000. The limit moves upward with the end-of-day balance and is monitored during the session, including unrealised losses. [5]

Thinking in terms of the actual remaining allowance makes the programme much easier to understand. The 50K label is not permission to lose $50,000. I covered the arithmetic in Behind the Risk; here, the practical point is to choose a size you can manage and keep that remaining room visible.

3 Why TopstepX matters so much to me

Key takeaway

TopstepX brings analysis, execution and account management into the same environment. That makes it a strong fit for the way I trade.

TopstepX combines embedded TradingView charts with trade management and risk tools. I like being able to move from reading the chart to managing a position without constantly changing environments. Familiarity with the workspace helps me concentrate on the trade I actually planned. [6]

The platform includes chart trading, a depth-of-market ladder and time and sales. Depending on how you trade, those views let you inspect price, available orders and completed transactions from different angles. You can also display executions on the chart to review where you entered and exited. [7]

For a price-action trader, that review can be more useful than adding another indicator. Did the entry happen where the setup called for it? Did the addition follow the plan? Did you act after the opportunity had already moved? Those are questions an entry marker can help you investigate.

The embedded charts do not connect to an external TradingView account or make its custom scripts automatically available. That is an important compatibility check if your workflow depends on a particular script. [7]

Keep the learning close to the trade

TopstepX also provides journalling for individual trades and trading days. Notes can sit alongside the record of what happened. [11]

A useful note might be: “The breakout met my conditions, but I added before the next planned level because I did not want to miss the move.” That tells you more about your decision than “bad discipline.” You now have a specific behaviour to review.

I want tools that make that kind of work easier. A clean trading record, a readable chart and a short explanation of the decision are a practical starting point for improvement.

Manage several accounts with care

The built-in trade copier can coordinate orders across a lead account and eligible followers. It reduces the need to repeat the same action manually. Followers are managed through the lead while copying is enabled, and execution differences can produce different results across accounts. [12]

There is a detail worth learning before using it: some personal risk settings are disabled on followers; the documentation specifically exempts the personal daily loss limit and personal daily profit target. Review those settings and the copier's behaviour before relying on them. [12]

The convenience is valuable. It also makes it especially important to know your combined exposure. Copying the same decision across several accounts multiplies its consequences.

4 Risk tools that support a decision made with a clear head

Key takeaway

The risk tools are my strongest reason to recommend looking closely at TopstepX. They let a trader turn a stated boundary into a platform setting.

It is easy to write “stop after my daily limit” when the market is closed. The real test arrives when you are down on the day and see one more setup that looks capable of recovering the loss.

I value tools that reduce the room for that negotiation. Here are the differences worth understanding.

A personal daily loss limit with a meaningful action

The Personal Daily Loss Limit, or PDLL, uses a threshold based on real-time net P&L. You must also choose the action. The documentation distinguishes Do Nothing, Liquidate, and Liquidate and Block. Liquidate closes positions; Liquidate and Block also prevents further trading until the next trading day. [8]

Suppose a trader decides that $300 is the session loss threshold. That is an illustrative number, not a recommended amount. If their intention is to end the session at that threshold, the selected action must match that intention. Simply entering “300” does not tell the full story.

A triggered liquidation does not guarantee an exact $300 final loss. Market movement and slippage can change the exit result. The benefit is an enforceable response to the threshold, rather than a promise about the precise fill. [7][8]

Daily Risk Lock keeps the boundary in place

Daily Risk Lock freezes the covered personal settings until the next trading session at 5 PM Central Time. It covers the personal loss limit, personal profit target and daily or weekly trade limits. Default brackets remain adjustable. [9]

This feature appeals to me because it separates two moments: deciding what is acceptable before trading, and reacting to what the market does afterwards. You can still manage a trade, but you cannot simply increase the locked daily allowance because the session became frustrating.

Lockout lets you finish the session

Lockout blocks an account for a chosen period. Activating it closes open positions and cancels working orders. It cannot be reversed during the chosen lockout, and it must be applied separately to each account. [10]

For me, this is one of TopstepX's standout features. Finishing a good session is a decision worth protecting too. You do not have to wait until something has gone wrong to decide that you are done.

Trade Clock serves a different purpose

Trade Clock pauses new entries while allowing you to manage an existing position. It does not automatically flatten your position or cancel existing orders. Its detailed documentation requires an open position or working order to enable it. [16]

That can be useful when you want to manage the trade already on the screen without adding exposure impulsively. Read the confirmation carefully: this is a different function from ending the session with Lockout.

A personal daily loss limit acts at a chosen threshold, according to its selected action

Figure 2. A personal daily loss limit acts at a chosen threshold, according to its selected action. Daily Risk Lock freezes covered settings. Lockout closes positions, cancels orders and blocks trading. Trade Clock pauses new entries while existing positions and orders remain.

These features support the way I think about trading psychology. A plan is easier to follow when the environment reinforces it. TopstepX gives traders several practical ways to create that environment. You still need a method worth following, but I consider this an excellent set of tools for following it more consistently.

5 TopstepTV deserves a place in the recommendation

Key takeaway

TopstepTV gives you a way to learn from preparation, discussion and live decision-making. I consider it one of the most valuable parts of the Topstep experience.

I am present on their YouTube channel every day. It is part of the community I spend time in, and it deserves much more attention than a passing mention at the bottom of a prop-firm review.

The official schedule includes Opening Call for preparation, Fast Markets during active trading, Power Hour later in the US session, and Slow Markets with Coach Dakota for the overnight environment. TopstepTV also offers free live group coaching and guest appearances. [13]

That variety matters. A beginner may need help understanding what traders look at before a session. Someone with more experience may be interested in a different way to read a particular market or handle a difficult day. You can choose the content that fits the question you are working on.

Watch the decisions as well as the outcome

Here is how I suggest getting more value from a broadcast. Choose one question before you start watching. For example: “What would make this trader abandon the initial idea?” Then note the conditions they describe and compare those conditions with what happens next.

You can also watch for how they respond to a missed entry, an unexpected move or a period with little opportunity. The useful lesson may be the trade they decide to leave alone.

That is particularly relevant to my own interest in news. I can enjoy observing a fast market without participating in it. A broadcast provides a place to follow the discussion while keeping my own trading boundaries.

A few places to start on YouTube

The official channel's video catalogue includes these specific resources:

These links are a viewing shortlist, not proof that any indicator or guest approach creates a profitable strategy. The video library is useful because it gives you a place to investigate a tool before adding it to your process.

Watch here:Topstep on YouTube. For live sessions and current programming, use the channel's live tab and the TopstepTV schedule. Broadcast schedules use US Central Time; check the current listing rather than relying on a fixed local-time conversion. [13][14]

6 Discord gives the community a place to meet

Key takeaway

The Discord community is a real part of why I recommend Topstep. You can learn about the programme, ask questions and meet people working through the same trading process.

Trading from home can be solitary. A question that seems obvious to an experienced trader can leave a beginner stuck for an afternoon. Having a place to ask that question, read other conversations and meet familiar people makes a difference to the experience.

Topstep's official community documentation describes access to the team and role-based channels. Participation depends on your verified role. To link your account, start in the Topstep dashboard, open Account Settings and use Link Discord, then follow the authorisation prompts. Unverified access is more limited. [15]

I am there every day. If you join, come say hello. I like that the community gives trading a human side: you can discuss what you are working on, share progress and stay connected between sessions.

The most useful question is often a precise one. “Why did my available payout change?” with the relevant account type and rule is easier to answer than “Why is the platform wrong?” Learning how to ask clearly is itself a useful trading habit.

Join the official Topstep Discord:discord.gg/topstep. This is the community invite linked by Topstep itself. [15]

For service availability, use Topstep's official status page. Topstep identifies it as the authoritative place for platform incidents and maintenance, which is more useful than trying to interpret scattered comments. [15]

One practical way to use the Topstep offering: prepare with TopstepTV, practise and execute in TopstepX, review the trade record, and bring a precise question to Discord before the next session

Figure 3. One practical way to use the Topstep offering: prepare with TopstepTV, practise and execute in TopstepX, review the trade record, and bring a precise question to Discord before the next session. This is a suggested learning routine, not a promised performance outcome.

7 Payouts make the opportunity tangible

Key takeaway

The possibility of real payouts is a central attraction, and the rules are published. Learn which conditions apply to your account before planning a withdrawal.

My public Topstep profile currently displays 33 lifetime payouts totalling $81,231. You can check it yourself on my public profile as Luffy HNR. Those are the displayed cumulative payouts checked on 4 October 2026, not an annual return or net profit after programme costs and taxes. The profile displays Express Funded status. [20]

I include that link because my recommendation comes with experience you can inspect. My results are not a forecast for someone starting today.

Topstep reports a 99.26% approval rate for payout requests. That is a strong positive claim about submitted requests, and it should be attributed to the company. It does not mean 99.26% of participants earn a payout. [19]

For context, Topstep's published 2025 statistics say 16.8% of initiated Combines were completed successfully and 33.3% of individual participants at the funded level received a payout. Those populations differ from submitted payout requests. They should not be combined into a made-up probability of success. [21]

The main XFA payout paths

XFA Standard requires five winning days of at least $150 net. After the first payout, it also requires positive net profit since the previous payout. XFA Consistency requires at least three traded days and a largest winning day no greater than 40% of the period's total net profit. These are separate choices from the Combine subscription pricing paths. [4][17]

The ordinary per-request limit is 50% of the XFA balance, subject to the following base caps. The published standard split is 90% to the trader. [17]

XFA sizeStandard base capConsistency base cap
50K$2,000$3,000
100K$3,000$4,000
150K$5,000$6,000

Topstep currently lists a limited offer that doubles these caps for qualifying new Combines with a Daily Loss Limit added at purchase. Confirm eligibility in checkout. Account history can also affect the applicable terms. [17]

A useful example: an eligible 50K Standard XFA with a $3,000 balance has a base request ceiling of $1,500, because half the balance is below the $2,000 cap. At a 90/10 split, that is $1,350 to the trader before any payment fees. This illustrates the calculation, not a predicted result.

After the first XFA payout, the MLL is fixed at zero. Withdrawing reduces the balance available above that floor. [5]

Fast payment needs the right context

Topstep advertises instant payment through Aeropay for eligible US traders and supported banks after approval. Other payment routes and review times apply elsewhere. A reader outside the US should check the available method before assuming the same delivery speed. [19]

I consider clear payout information and a verifiable payout history important reasons to take Topstep seriously. They make the offer concrete enough to evaluate on its actual terms.

8 What the programme costs

Key takeaway

Compare the cost of the route you expect to use, including activation and renewals. The lowest first payment and the lowest total cost are not always the same.

These are the published base Combine prices checked on 4 October 2026, before discounts and applicable taxes. [18]

Combine sizeStandard per monthNo Activation Fee per month
50K$49$95
100K$99$149
150K$199$229

The Standard pricing path adds a $149 fee for each XFA earned. The No Activation Fee path has no activation charge. Level 1 data is included; full depth-of-market data is an optional paid upgrade. Live account costs differ. [18]

For a 50K account, one monthly payment followed by activation would total $198 on Standard or $95 on No Activation Fee. After four monthly payments, the corresponding totals would be $345 and $380. These calculations exclude discounts, taxes, resets and optional services; they assume one successful activation at the end of the period.

The example explains the trade-off. You cannot know in advance exactly when you will pass, so it is worth thinking through more than one scenario.

The Combine renews every 30 days until passed or cancelled. There is no fixed deadline to pass, but an inactive account still has an active subscription. Breaching the MLL does not automatically cancel that subscription. [22]

The fees buy access to a structured programme and its included services. During the simulated stages, market losses do not directly debit a personal brokerage deposit, but your programme spending is real. Set a total budget you are comfortable spending even if no payout follows.

I recommend evaluating that full package. The platform and education have practical value, especially if you take the time to use them. Buying repeated evaluations without changing how you trade is a poor way to capture that value.

9 How I would suggest getting started

Key takeaway

Explore the learning resources, understand the rules and learn the platform before trying to accelerate the process. Give yourself a chance to use what makes Topstep worthwhile.

Start with a broadcast and the official programme overview. Get a feel for the people, the terminology and the way the programme works. The YouTube channel is an easy place to begin before making a purchase.

Then read the rules for the account you are considering. Check geographic eligibility, trading hours, permitted products, total cost, the MLL and the selected payout path. A Trading Combine consistency objective and an XFA Consistency payout objective are different things; do not apply a remembered percentage from one stage to another. [3][4][23]

Learn the platform controls at a pace that lets you explain them. Know which account is selected, what happens when a limit triggers, how to cancel a working order and how to flatten the account. Test unfamiliar controls in an appropriate practice environment before depending on them.

Choose one improvement to work on. It might be following the planned position size, avoiding an impulsive addition or ending the day when the plan says to stop. Select the relevant TopstepX tool, then review whether you actually used it correctly.

Finally, use the community. Bring a question from your review, attend a coaching segment or discuss a platform feature you are trying to understand. You will get more from the experience by participating with a purpose.

10 Why my preference remains Topstep

Key takeaway

Topstep earns my recommendation through the combination of its programme, TopstepX, TopstepTV and the community. Those are the reasons behind my enthusiasm.

I want to be able to explain why I recommend something. In Topstep's case, I can point to a long operating history, a platform whose risk tools fit my priorities, accessible educational content and a community I am part of every day.

TopstepX is a particularly strong part of that recommendation. A platform that lets me define boundaries and protect a decision to stop is useful to the trader I am trying to be. TopstepTV and Discord add people, explanations and opportunities to learn around that work.

A personal brokerage account remains a valid choice for traders who want that independence and can support it with their own capital. My preference here is about the funded futures programme and the environment surrounding it. Topstep Brokerage is a separate offering. [2][21]

If those priorities sound like yours, Topstep deserves a place at the top of your shortlist. For me, it remains the first choice.

What do you value most in your trading environment: the platform, the risk tools or the people around you? ~

Futures trading involves substantial risk. Programme fees can be lost without receiving a payout. Personal results and testimonials do not predict your results. This article shares my experience and explains the programme; it does not recommend a trade in a financial instrument.
